Hey Guys and Gals! Hopefully this post can be just for reference or “in case”, but if you are in the midst of one of these suckers (fever blisters, cold sores, herpes simplex 1 break out…you know) I feel your pain! If you are afflicted with this troublesome little virus you should know that you are not alone! According to Johns Hopkins Medicine 50% to 80% of the population are right there with you too…… yep; including me.
Of course I’ve called on my trusty essential oils and herbs to combat this unfortunate situation. My blends must always contain tea tree oil which is an amazing essential oil with super anti-viral properties and it’s actually the very oil that started me on my healing journey, more about that here.
I usually keep mine under control or dormant by using tea tree oil toothpaste daily. I would say that it had been about 6 months since I had my last one but something triggered a behemoth of an outbreak this time around. I am not particularly stressed, so maybe I’ll chalk this one up to scratching my lip or hitting it with my hula hoop! Hey, it happens 😉
I believe prevention is the best way to go about dealing with this but sometimes it can be difficult to head an outbreak off at the pass. The minute I feel any sensation in my lip where I normally break out, I immediately put tea tree oil diluted in any carrier oil on the area. This usually hinders any progression to a full-blown flare up for me. I have created an actual compounded lip balm to help me easily keep up with applications anywhere the feeling strikes! Just make sure if you touch ANYTHING on your lip that you clean it immediately. I clean my lip balm after each application by sort of scrapping the top layer off with a tissue. I’m sharing a couple of recipes below for how I prevent or manage my own cold sores.
Blister Be Gone**
1/2 oz. Beeswax
1 oz. Coconut oil (unrefined)
1 oz. Jojoba wax (any liquid oil that would be alright to ingest would work here)
45 drops Tea Tree essential oil, Melaleuca alternifolia
5 drops Lavender essential oil, Lavandula angustifolia (not pictured)
In a double boiler, blend oils one at a time until melted following order listed above. Add the essential oils and package in vessel of choice.
On day two I made a tea where the ingredients have been noted to be particularly suited to deal with conditions causing viral flare ups.
One Tea Tree Two**
1 tsp licorice root, dried (Sedating, Cooling)
1 tsp dried lemon balm leaves, dried (Sedating, Cooling)
1 tsp dried mint leaves, dried (Nervine, Analgesic)
1 tsp honey, unrefined (Nourishing)
Mix dried herbs in an infuser and add to boiling water, enough for a cup. Once steeped, about 5 minutes or so, add the honey and enjoy. Once it is cool enough, hold that beautiful concoction on your lip. You could also dip a cotton ball or cotton cloth in the tea and place over lip.
